Practical guidance

Keep commas, quotes, and newlines inside CSV fields

A CSV record is not always one visible line of text. Product descriptions often contain punctuation and line breaks that belong inside a single field.

Read the boundaries

CSV uses an outside separator and an inside text value. A field containing the separator, a quote, or a line break needs quoting. Within a quoted field, a literal quote is represented by two quotes. The examples below use commas; a semicolon-delimited file has a different outside separator.

SKU,Title,Description
00018,"Cup, large","Says ""good morning"""
00019,Notebook,"First line
Second line"

Diagnose an unexpected extra column

  1. Check the detected delimiter in the tool.
  2. Compare the header field count with the affected record.
  3. Find the comma or quote near the point where values shifted columns.
  4. Fix the enclosing syntax, then confirm that the product text is unchanged.

Do not flatten descriptions

Replacing every line break with a space can hide a quoting defect while changing legitimate descriptions. Removing commas can alter sizes, ingredients, or names. Reparse after a targeted change and compare the decoded cell value, not only the number of visible lines.

What this check cannot establish

Malformed quoting can make the intended record boundaries unknowable. Golanto preserves the original and refuses a machine export when the parse is ambiguous.
