Understand Shopify handles, variants, and image rows

A product can occupy several rows. Counting repeated handles as duplicate products can lead to deleting valid variants or additional images.

Read a product as a group

Shopify uses a shared handle to associate variant and additional-image rows with their product. In a continuation row, a blank product title does not automatically mean the entire row is empty.

URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU,Product image URL
linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Size,Small,00091,https://example.com/front.jpg
linen-shirt,,Size,Large,00092,
linen-shirt,,,,,https://example.com/back.jpg

Inspect the role of each row

  1. Identify the product’s first record.
  2. Compare option values and SKUs on the variant records.
  3. Separate additional-image records from variant records.
  4. Investigate conflicting product data without deleting repeated handles.

Preserve the whole group

Sort or filter with care. Moving a continuation record away from its product context makes manual review harder. When changing identifiers or options, compare all records for the product and keep a source-backed change log.

What this check cannot establish

This example demonstrates row structure only. The example.com image URLs are placeholders and are not import-ready media. Golanto does not fetch images or merge records.
