Review Shopify CSV updates before overwriting products

An update file is an instruction to change existing products. Start with the fields you intend to edit and compare the file against a fresh export.

Empty is different from absent

Shopify documents that a supplied blank field can clear an existing value when overwriting, while an omitted optional column can leave it unchanged. Review blanks separately from syntax errors.

URL handle,Title,Vendor
stone-cup,Stone cup,

Make a change plan

  1. Export and keep the current product data.
  2. List the fields you intend to change and the products affected.
  3. Select update mode in Golanto.
  4. Inspect every blank-field warning and every option-related warning.
  5. Compare the corrected file with the original export before importing a small controlled batch.

Keep variant dependencies together

The official specification warns about variant updates that omit required option context. Do not remove columns solely to reduce the number of warnings. Read the dependency finding and compare the intended variant with the current store record.

Worked example

Two different update intents

Before
URL handle,Title,Vendor
stone-cup,Stone cup,
After review
URL handle,Title
stone-cup,Stone cup

The second file omits Vendor. Choose this only when leaving that field unchanged is the intended update; other column dependencies still need review.

What this check cannot establish

Golanto has no live store snapshot and cannot predict every overwrite effect. A clean file does not guarantee that an update is reversible or that variant identities will remain unchanged.

Check your file

Start with a copy. Review changes before downloading your import file.
