Import troubleshooting

Handle a blank price in a Shopify import

Do not fill an empty price with zero just to make a file pass. Confirm which row represents a sellable variant and what its price should be.

Documented error

Validation failed: price can't be blank

Read the message in context

Shopify’s troubleshooting page lists this error, while its current CSV specification also describes a default price for omitted values. These statements do not justify a universal automatic fix. Golanto treats the blank as a review finding and asks you to confirm the intended price.

  1. Locate the reported product and variant in the import preview.
  2. Check that the price column mapped to the intended field.
  3. Determine whether the row is a variant or only an additional image.
  4. Use the source price list to fill a variant price, then inspect every price change before importing.

Be deliberate about updates

Compare the file with a fresh export of the existing product. A blank in an update file deserves separate review from an intentional zero price. If the goal is to leave pricing unchanged, design the update around the fields you actually intend to change.

Worked example

Price absent from a synthetic variant record

Inspect this record
URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price
ceramic-bowl,Ceramic bowl,Size,Small,

There is no safe proposed price until the merchant supplies one. An additional-image record would require a different interpretation.

What this check cannot establish

Golanto does not know your currency, store pricing rules, or current live prices. This finding is not a guarantee that a particular Shopify import will fail.
