Practical guidance
Keep a Google product id when the title changes
On a Google product data source, id and title are different attributes. id is the unique identifier. title is the product name. When the name changes, the specification says to keep the id the same. This guide answers that file question only. It does not copy another feed’s columns, and Golanto does not submit the data source.
What does the specification say id is for?
id is labeled Required. It is the product’s unique identifier. The syntax line says max 50 characters. The minimum requirements say to use a unique value for each product, use the product’s SKU where possible, keep the id the same when updating your data, use only valid unicode characters, and use the same id for the same product across countries or languages. The specification’s example is A2B4.
A title is a poor stand-in for that value. The title can change when the landing page name changes, and the id is supposed to stay. A title can also be longer than the id limit. The synthetic name below is 57 characters, so it cannot be stored in an id whose maximum is 50.
What does the specification say title is for?
title, or structured_title when generative AI wrote the name, is the product’s name. title is plain text, max 150 characters. It should accurately describe the product and match the title on the landing page. Distinguishing features such as color or size belong in that name. Promotional text such as "free shipping", all capital letters, and gimmicky foreign characters do not. The specification’s title example is Mens Pique Polo Shirt. Choosing between title and structured_title is covered on the Google Merchant Center page. This guide only keeps id stable while that name is edited.
id,title
MUG-350,"Handmade stoneware mug, 350 ml, speckled sand glaze, gift"How do you edit the name without editing the id?
- Keep the original data source. Find the id you already submitted for the product. The specification says to keep that id when you update the data, and to reuse it for the same product in another country or language.
- Put the current landing-page name in title, or in structured_title content if generative AI wrote it. Do not paste the name into id.
- If the name contains a comma, quote the field. The 57-character synthetic name in the example needs quotes. The id beside it is MUG-350.
- In Golanto, choose Google Merchant Center and map the SKU column to id and the name column to title. The mapper still opens on Amazon until you change the platform. Review the row before you export.
- Submit the updated data source from Merchant Center yourself. Golanto does not submit it. If you do not already have an id for the product, use the SKU where you can, and do not invent a second id later when the name changes.
Worked example
The product name was copied into the Google id
id,title
"Handmade stoneware mug, 350 ml, speckled sand glaze, gift","Handmade stoneware mug, 350 ml, speckled sand glaze, gift"id,title
MUG-350,"Handmade stoneware mug, 350 ml, speckled sand glaze, gift"The name is 57 characters, which is over the 50-character id maximum on the product data specification. MUG-350 is a synthetic SKU. The specification’s own id example is A2B4, and its title example is Mens Pique Polo Shirt. Keep MUG-350 if the glaze description later changes. This row still omits description, link, image_link, availability, and price.
What this check cannot establish
Golanto does not submit the data source to Google Merchant Center and does not look up the id Google already stored. This guide uses the Product data specification retrieved on 2 November 2026, and only the id and title rules needed to keep the identifier stable. It does not reprint structured_title sub-attributes, price, availability, or the rest of the specification. Another catalog’s id column has its own page. A 57-character count here is for the synthetic name in the example, not a second limit from Google.

Common questions
Should the Google product id change when the title changes?
No. The product data specification says to keep the id the same when updating your data, and to use the same id for the same product across countries or languages. Put the new landing-page name in title, or in structured_title when generative AI wrote the name.
Can a long product name be copied into the Google id?
id is max 50 characters. title is max 150 characters. The synthetic name in this guide is 57 characters, so it does not fit in id. Use the SKU where you can. The specification’s example id is A2B4, which is not a product name.
