Import products into Ecwid with a CSV
Ecwid adds and updates products from a CSV in the store admin, under Catalog, then Data Import & Export. The file needs a header row. Ecwid says a file with no header cannot be imported.
What does an Ecwid product CSV need before upload?
The format guide says every file needs a header of column names, column order does not matter when those names are right, and the recommended encoding is UTF-8. You can leave out columns you are not importing. Mandatory columns depend on the row type and on whether you are creating or updating, and the format guide sends that list to Ecwid’s column reference. A file exported from Ecwid already has the formatting Ecwid expects.
The same guide uses a type column when a file mixes kinds of rows. The values it names are product, product_option, product_variation, product_file, category, site_redirect, and customer. If every row is a product, you can omit the type column, and Ecwid treats the rows as products.
How does a row update a product that is already in Ecwid?
The format guide says an update specifies the product ID or a unique product SKU. If SKUs are empty or not unique, Ecwid says you can identify products only by their IDs. Export the catalog and read product_internal_id for products and category_internal_id for categories. The getting-started article says you may delete columns you are not changing, and that you leave product_sku and product_internal_id so the import can tell which product the row is for. Its sample price edit uses the product_price column, and its sample weight edit uses product_weight. In the sketch below, 4812 stands for a product_internal_id copied from that export.

CUP-19,4812,24.00How do you upload the CSV in Ecwid?
- If the store already has products, export the catalog from Catalog, then Data Import & Export, and keep a copy of that export. Ecwid’s best-practice article says to close the storefront under Settings, then General, then Close Storefront for Maintenance, when the store is busy or this is your first import.
- In Golanto, choose Ecwid and record the store and the date you checked the help articles. Map your columns onto Ecwid’s column names. Do not upload a supplier file that has no header.
- In the store admin, open Catalog, then Data Import & Export, click Import File, and choose the CSV. Click Start Import.
- Ecwid says a large catalog can take several hours. The best-practice article says you can leave the page after the “Catalog import in progress” notice. When it finishes, a notification appears at the top right. The getting-started article describes the completion notice as green.
- Check Catalog, then Products, or Catalog, then Categories. Import history on the same Data Import & Export page keeps the last 20 sessions, and Download Import File saves a copy of a file you already imported.
Worked example
A supplier header is not yet an Ecwid column name
sku,name,price
CUP-19,Enamel cup,24.00These headings are a supplier sketch. Ecwid’s format guide says the header has to use Ecwid’s column names, and that a file with no header cannot be imported. On an update, keep the identifier. The getting-started article names product_sku and product_internal_id as the columns to leave in place, and it uses product_price for a price change. Ecwid’s own sample file creates its two products in a disabled state so customers do not see them. Replace sample rows with your products rather than publishing that sample.
What this check cannot establish
Golanto does not upload to Ecwid, close the storefront, or read import history. This page uses Ecwid’s getting-started article, best-practice article, and format guide, retrieved on 1 November 2026. Those pages name the identifier columns and the type values above. They point to a separate column reference for the full mandatory list, and this page does not reproduce that reference. Ecwid says errors are described on the import page. This page does not quote error text from the column reference. A sample CSV is a starting file Ecwid provides. It is not a certificate that every store uses the same optional columns.

Common questions
Can I import an Ecwid CSV that has no header row?
No. Ecwid’s format guide says you cannot import a file if there is no header. The header is the first row of column names, and those names need to match Ecwid’s column reference.
How does Ecwid match a row to a product that already exists?
The format guide says to specify the product ID or a unique product SKU. If SKUs are empty or not unique, Ecwid says you can identify products only by their IDs. Export the catalog to read product_internal_id. The getting-started article says to leave product_sku and product_internal_id in the file when you delete columns you are not updating.
