Put every Trade Me My Products column on row 1

Trade Me’s My Products page says you create products or update existing products by uploading a CSV. The import guide on sell.trademe.co.nz is version 6.15, revised 15 September 2021. It says the first row must contain every column name in the guide, in any order, and that an optional column still has to be on that row. This page lists those names and the blank-cell rules that decide whether a value can be empty. It does not reprint the guide’s field descriptions.

What does My Products say the file is?

The public My Products page calls the tool a free bulk listing tool and says import and export via CSV is how you create products or update existing ones. It also names automatic fixed price offers, folders, a combined shipping offer, scheduled end times, and automatic relisting. It does not name columns. The import guide is the column document. It says the product file must be a CSV with a .csv extension, and that photos are a second set of files in JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, or BMP. The file may have any name. The guide’s own filename examples are andysappliances_20090702_1022.csv and Shoeseller Products.csv.

Row 1 must contain all of the column names below. Order does not matter. A column cannot be omitted because its cells are blank. The guide says any mandatory value left blank will either be defaulted or will encounter an error. It does not print that error sentence. Positive answers are True, Yes, and 1. Negative answers are False, No, and 0. Casing does not matter. Opening the CSV in Excel drops leading zeros: the guide’s example is 0036 becoming 36. It also says a monetary value such as 4.40 may display as 4.4, and that this is fine.

Which cells can be blank, and where does the guide disagree with itself?

category_id is mandatory. It is a leaf category code, not the path name. title cannot be blank and its maximum length is 50. body cannot be blank and its maximum length is 2048. start_price is a number without a currency symbol, minimum 50c, and the maximum must be under $99,999,999. The guide says to set the start price even when you only intend to use Buy Now. buy_now_price uses the same minimum and maximum, may be blank, and must be greater than or equal to the start price when you set it. A blank is_new defaults to false. barcode_gtin may be blank, with a maximum length of 100. is_clearance, was_price, and has_promo each say you will need to add the column, and each says the feature is only available to authorised Trade Me members. was_price also says the value should be greater than the Buy Now price unless you are using has_promo, and that is_clearance should be set to true.

stock_amount says to leave it blank when stock is unlimited and to set unlimited_stock to True, and to set unlimited_stock to False when a stock level is specified. unlimited_stock says to set it to True if stock_amount has a whole number, otherwise False. Those two comments contradict each other. This page does not pick one. photo_id_list holds up to 20 filenames or photo URLs, separated by semicolons, and the first one is the main photo. The comments say a URL is uploaded when the import runs. The restrictions say photos need to be uploaded before the import. Both sentences are in version 6.15. A blank update_active_listings defaults to false. The guide says an active listing that cannot take the update is reported on the Download warnings link, and its example is a title that cannot change once bids exist. That is an example, not a quoted error sentence.

How do you map a supplier file onto the My Products CSV?

  1. Download version 6.15 from sell.trademe.co.nz and open the My Products CSV upload. In Golanto, choose Trade Me. Record New Zealand and version 6.15. The mapper still opens on Amazon until you change the platform.
  2. Put every column name from the guide on row 1. Leave an optional cell blank. Do not delete the column.
  3. Map the leaf category code to category_id, the listing title to title, and the description to body. Set start_price even for a Buy Now listing. Keep a leading zero in a SKU or barcode by storing that cell as text. The guide’s Excel example turns 0036 into 36.
  4. For photos, follow the sentence that matches the file you actually have. A filename must match a photo uploaded first. A URL is fetched when the import runs. Separate several with semicolons, and put the main photo first. The maximum is 20.
  5. Upload the .csv in My Products. If a blank mandatory cell is rejected, use the message on that screen. The guide says the result is a default or an error, and it does not print the error text. Fee amounts are also absent: the guide says some options incur a fee and does not print the schedule.

Worked example

A three-column supplier row is not a Trade Me My Products file

Inspect this record
sku,title,price
BEANIE-07,Merino beanie,32.00

These headings are a synthetic supplier sketch. Version 6.15 requires every column name in the guide on row 1, in any order, including columns whose cells are blank. category_id is mandatory. title cannot be blank and stops at 50 characters. body cannot be blank. This sketch has neither category_id nor body. Do not upload it to My Products.

What this check cannot establish

Golanto does not upload to Trade Me, assign leaf category codes, or charge the fees the guide mentions. This page uses the public My Products page and the import-guide PDF, retrieved on 2 November 2026. The PDF prints version 6.15, author Chris Andrews, Trade Me Limited, created 11 July 2014, revised 15 September 2021. The response that served the PDF carried Last-Modified 17 December 2025. This page follows the printed 6.15 text, not that server date. The footer says the document is proprietary and confidential and may not be copied without permission, so this page lists the column names required on row 1 and the short blank-cell rules, and it does not reprint the field descriptions. https://www.trademe.co.nz/help/selling/my-products redirected to a 404, so no fee figure from a help page is stated here. The stock comments contradict each other, and the photo comments and photo restrictions disagree about when the file must already be uploaded. No import error sentence is printed in the guide. This is the New Zealand My Products CSV.

Common questions

Can I omit optional columns from a Trade Me My Products CSV?

No. Version 6.15 says the first row must contain every column name in the guide. The columns can be in any order. A column cannot be omitted even when it is optional. An optional cell can be blank. category_id is mandatory, and title and body cannot be blank.

What error does Trade Me show for a blank mandatory cell?

The import guide does not print one. It says a mandatory value left blank will either be defaulted or will encounter an error. A blank is_new defaults to false. A blank update_active_listings defaults to false. Use the message My Products shows you, including anything on the Download warnings link. That link is named in the guide and its text is not reproduced there.
