Practical guidance

Choose the header row in a marketplace template

A marketplace workbook often puts a title or an instruction above the row that names the columns. Mapping against the title lines products up under the wrong names. You choose the row. Golanto does not fetch the template, and the files stay on your computer.

How do you start from files you already have?

  1. Open the marketplace template mapper. Choose your product CSV, then choose the CSV or Excel template you downloaded from the shop.
  2. The page says files up to 5 MB, and a template can have 256 columns. Golanto does not fetch the template or decide which fields the shop requires.
  3. Open “Look at the template” and read the first rows. Row numbers on that preview start at 1.
  4. Optional notes for the review report are the shop, country or market, product category, template version, and the template’s web address. If you enter a web address, it has to start with https. Golanto records that address. It does not open it.

Which row is the header?

A template with one sheet uses row 1 until you change it. If the column names are lower down, open “Column names are on another row,” enter that row number, and choose “Use these column names.” A template with more than one sheet asks you to pick the sheet and the row, then use those column names.

Golanto drops empty cells at the end of the row you select. An empty cell between two names is rejected with “The selected row must contain nonempty column headings,” and the later names do not move left. A repeated name is rejected with “The selected template row has duplicate headings. Select the machine-readable field row.” A formula on that row is rejected with “The chosen header row contains formulas. Replace them with the official text headings before mapping.” Formulas elsewhere in the sheet are not executed.

A title in the first cell, with empty cells after it, can pass this check because those trailing empty cells are removed. If row 1 is a title, choose the row underneath. When the sheet has numeric cells, Golanto says those cells may have lost leading zeros. It does not repair them. Use the scientific-notation guide when a long digit code was stored as a number.

Row 1: Product upload
Row 2: SKU, Title, Price
Row 3: 00018, Stone bowl, 18.00

How do you map one column to one destination?

The source CSV has to be structurally readable first. An unnamed source header, a repeated header, or a row with a different number of cells stops mapping until you resolve it. Columns with the same name are already matched. You choose a place for the rest. Each shop column can be used once. If two source columns point at the same destination, change one of them. Export stops with “Map each source and template column at most once.”

Unmapped source columns stay at the end when “Preserve unmapped source columns at the end of the file” is selected. If one of those headings is the same text as a template heading, mapping stops until you map that source column explicitly. Shop columns you leave empty are exported empty. An empty value can clear a value the shop already has. Confirm that against the template’s own instructions before you import.

Worked example

Price was not mapped, so that template column stays empty

Before
sku,name,amount
00018,Stone bowl,18.00
After review
SKU,Title,Price,amount
00018,Stone bowl,,18.00

In this sketch the merchant matched sku to SKU and name to Title, and left amount unmapped. With preservation on, amount stays at the end and Price is empty. An empty Price can clear an existing value during an update. These headings are synthetic. Copy the real names from the template you downloaded.

What this check cannot establish

Golanto does not download a marketplace template, infer required fields, or certify that an import will be accepted. A saved mapping, when you use one, applies exact header names only after you confirm that it matches the current template. A clean header row does not prove the cell values satisfy the template’s category rules.

Check your file

Start with a copy. Review changes before downloading your import file.

Common questions

Does the template mapper download the official template?

No. You choose the CSV or Excel file yourself. Golanto does not fetch the template. A web address you type is recorded in the review report and is not opened.

Can one template column receive two source columns?

No. Each shop column can be used once. If two source columns point at the same destination, change one of them before you export.
