Name a blank cell in a CSV header row

A header cell with no name still occupies a column. Deleting it to clear a warning can move every value to its right into the wrong field. Two columns that share a visible name are a different problem, covered by the duplicate-header guide.

What does a blank header cell mean in a CSV?

RFC 4180 says an optional header line contains names corresponding to the fields, and that it should contain the same number of fields as the records. It also says the last field in a record must not be followed by a comma. A trailing comma adds a field. On a header row, that extra field has an empty name. An empty name between two commas, as in SKU,,Title, is an interior column.

RFC 4180 says spaces are part of a field and should not be ignored. A header made only of spaces is not the same text as a truly empty header. Golanto treats a header as unnamed when trimming leaves nothing, and asks you to name it. That blank-header check is Golanto’s mapping rule. RFC 4180 does not state it.

How do you name the column without moving the data?

  1. Keep an untouched copy and open a working copy in a text editor.
  2. Count the header fields and one data row. A trailing comma adds one empty field at the end.
  3. In Golanto’s CSV validator, read the blank-header finding. The message is “Give this column a name.” The column stays in place. Golanto does not invent a name and does not shift later columns left.
  4. Confirm the meaning from the system that exported the file, or from the official template you are mapping toward.
  5. Type that name yourself and leave the cells underneath unchanged. A second empty header cell is also reported as a repeated heading, because the empty name already occurred. Columns that share a visible name belong in the duplicate-header guide.

Why the template mapper rejects an empty template heading

Golanto drops empty cells at the end of the template row you select. An empty cell between two names stays, and the row is rejected with “The selected row must contain nonempty column headings.” Later template columns do not slide left to fill the gap. Resolve an unnamed column in the source CSV before mapping. The mapper does not map a source file that still has a structure error.

Worked example

The middle header is empty, and the values stay in their columns

Before
SKU,,Title
00044,Kitchen,Stone bowl
After review
SKU,Department,Title
00044,Kitchen,Stone bowl

Department is a name the merchant supplies after checking the export. It is not inferred from the word Kitchen. This is a synthetic file, not a marketplace template.

What this check cannot establish

Golanto cannot decide which business field an unnamed column represents. Giving it a name does not make a marketplace accept the column. RFC 4180 does not list required catalog headers, and a trailing comma is outside the common format it describes. This check does not delete empty data rows.

Common questions

Should I delete a blank header column?

Only when you have confirmed that the cells under it are not product data you need. Golanto keeps the column and asks you to name it. Deleting it can move the following values into the wrong fields.
