Prepare a Pinterest retail catalog without a guessed parent id
Pinterest’s retail catalog article says the data source needs a fixed set of fields, formatted exactly as printed, or the entire retail catalog fails ingestion. item_group_id is in that set only when products have multiple variants. This is a catalog feed for product Pins, not a marketplace seller-center CSV. Golanto does not submit it or host it.
Which fields does Pinterest say the whole catalog needs?
The required table lists id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, and item_group_id. The item_group_id row says it is only required when products have multiple variants. id is a unique ID, max 127 characters. The example is DS0294-L. title is the product name, the same name as on the landing page, including variant details such as color and size, max 500 characters. The example is Women’s denim shirt, large. description is plain text, not HTML, max 10,000 characters. link is the landing page, max 511 characters, and the syntax line says it starts with http://. The example URL on that row is https. image_link is the main image, at least 1000 x 1500 pixels, max 2,000 characters, and a changed image needs a different link or the image will not update. availability is one of in stock, out of stock, or preorder.
price should reflect the true cost and include an ISO 4217 currency if it is not US dollars. Otherwise Pinterest defaults to US dollars. The page says not to use 0 values or currency symbols. The syntax examples it prints include 24.99 USD, 24.99USD, 24,99 USD, 24,99USD, 24.99, 24,99, and several GBP arrangements. This page does not decide which of those a supplier file meant. item_group_id is the parent ID, max 127 characters. The example is DS0294. The same name appears again in the optional product-identifiers table. The required-table sentence is the one that limits it to products with multiple variants.
Required table, as the article labels them
id
title
description
link
image_link
price
availability
item_group_id (only when products have multiple variants)What file details does that article add around the table?
Supported formats are tab-separated TSV, comma-separated CSV, XML as RSS 2.0 or ATOM 1.0, and Google Sheets. Compressed files are accepted. The extensions it names are .zip, .giz, .gz, .bz2, and others. It does not support encrypted or password-protected compressed files, or Dropbox files. For CSV it recommends wrapping values in double quotes. Required and set values should follow standardized American English. The data source must be UTF-8, except GOOGLE_TSV_EXCEL files, which must be ISO_8859_1.
A hosted data source sits on FTP, SFTP, or WebDAV, or on an HTTP or HTTPS direct-download link. It must be reachable by a user-agent, without IP or SSH key whitelisting. If the URL has a port, the port is 80 or 443. A manual upload skips that hosting section. The article says Pinterest can process up to 20 million products per retail catalog. The same article then prints optional tables for general attributes, product identifiers, characteristics, tax and shipping, custom labels, and shopping ad fields. This page does not reprint those columns. The required list above is the required table. The optional list is partial because it is not copied here.
How do you build the data source without sending it?
- Keep the original export. Decide whether you will upload the data source manually or host it. If you host it, follow the hosting rules on the article. Golanto does not host the file.
- In Golanto, choose Pinterest. Record the country or region, the language, and the date you read the article. The mapper still opens on Amazon until you change the platform.
- Map id, title, description, link, image_link, price, and availability for every product. Add item_group_id only on rows that are variants of one product, and use the same parent id on those rows. Leave it off a product that has a single row.
- For a CSV, wrap values in double quotes, which is the article’s recommendation. Save UTF-8 unless the file you are matching is a GOOGLE_TSV_EXCEL file, which the article says must be ISO_8859_1.
- Read Pinterest’s ingestion errors yourself. Golanto does not submit the data source. A missing required field, or a field formatted incorrectly, is what the article says fails the entire retail catalog.
Worked example
Two Pinterest sizes with no parent id
id,title,price,availability
MUG-350-S,"Stoneware mug, small",18.00 USD,in stock
MUG-350-L,"Stoneware mug, large",18.00 USD,in stockid,title,price,availability,item_group_id
MUG-350-S,"Stoneware mug, small",18.00 USD,in stock,MUG-350
MUG-350-L,"Stoneware mug, large",18.00 USD,in stock,MUG-350These rows are synthetic. The article’s examples are DS0294-L, Women’s denim shirt, large, and the parent id DS0294. Two sizes are multiple variants, so the required table asks for item_group_id. A product with one row does not get a parent id from that sentence. description, link, and image_link are still required and are not in this sketch. 18.00 USD follows the number-then-currency shape. The article also prints 24,99 USD among its price examples. This sketch does not pick a comma decimal for you.
What this check cannot establish
Golanto does not submit or host a Pinterest data source, and it does not choose a country where catalogs are available. The retail catalog article retrieved on 2 November 2026 showed a notice that catalogs may be unavailable in the viewer’s region, and it still rendered the field tables. This page does not list countries. The required table is quoted, including the variant limit on item_group_id. Optional tables on that article are not reprinted, so that part of the field list is partial. The compressed-file list includes the extension .giz as printed. A mapped file is not an ingested catalog.

Common questions
What happens if a required Pinterest catalog column is missing?
The retail catalog article says the fields must be formatted exactly as printed. If they are missing, or formatted incorrectly, the entire retail catalog fails ingestion. The required names are id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, and item_group_id only when products have multiple variants.
Does every Pinterest product need item_group_id?
The required table says item_group_id is only required when products have multiple variants. It is the parent ID, max 127 characters. The same column name also appears in the optional product-identifiers table. A single-row product is outside the required-table condition.
